When ex-Confederate soldier Ethan decides to find the Comanche Indians responsible for his family's death and niece's kidnapping he is accompanied by his half-breed Indian nephew Martin Pawley. With Ethan's deep hate for Indians the two go in search of the Comanche rebels. But Martin fears that Ethan's hate will get in the way of his motives for rescuing his niece when after a five year's journey Ethan discovers that his niece has adapted to the ways of the tribe.
