A powerful, playful alien, in the guise of an old English Lord, plays fun and games with the Enterprise crew.

This episode features memorable conflict between Kirk and the alien Trelane. This Guest Star William Campbell (also: "Trouble with Tribbles" as a Klingon) is a hoot as Trelane, the foppish and dangerous alien. Trelane's castle is well fitted with treasures from Paramount's prop warehouse. This character seems to the forerunner of Next Generation's playful "Q".

SYNOPSIS...
The Enterprise goes into orbit around the planet Gothos. They receive old fashioned greetings from the planet below. Soon, Captain Kirk and other crew members are whisked off the Enterprise against their will.

On the planet, Kirk and the others meet Trelane, a powerful alien who looks and acts like an English gentleman from a bygone era. When Kirk tires of the alien's games, he and Trelane become involved in a life and death struggle. Kirk is sentenced to hang.

At the last moment, Alien energy entities shows up and Kirk is spared. Trelane turns out to be an alien "child" who has been a bad boy. His alien "parents" take him away.
