Star Trek Review: CATSPAW
Director Joseph Pevney's, CATSPAW, is an altogether spooky Sci-Fi yarn. Pevney also directed numerous other Classic "Trek" episodes, including: "Devil in the Dark", "Journey to Babel", and "Wolf in the Fold", among many others.
Teleplay writer, Robert Bloch, has fun with the Halloween themed episode. It's lighter in tone than his "Wolf in the Fold." "Catspaw" is more like "The Trouble with Tribbles" than "Wolf", in that it doesn't take itself too seriously.
Antoinette Bower does a fine job as the alien, Sylvia. Bower also appeared on the television shows, "Thriller" and "Perry Mason".
Pevney, who directed numerous Classic "Trek" episodes, seems to have had an easy way with the talent. He would also appear to have possessed indepth knowledge of the characters they played.
As fair as FX go, the blue screen, involving the giant cat, is not up to par. And the decision to have the "giant" cat move SLIGHTLY, in slow motion, seems wrong headed.
At one point, a small silver Enterprise, on a chain, is held over a flame. Whoever possesses this rare, early collectible is a lucky Trekker indeed.
CATSPAW should be rather watchable for most Sci-Fi viewers. Halloween enthusiasts will dig this episode.
