Star Trek Review: THE ENEMY WITHIN
Director Leo Penn's, THE ENEMY WITHIN, is a classic "Star Trek" episode. Penn's other directing credits include: "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" and "Lost in Space".
Writer, Richard Matheson ("The Night Stalker","The Incredible Shrinking Man") has taken a fiction cliché, the evil double, and worked some fresh changes on it. Among other things, the evil Kirk is not all bad. And the good Kirk, though nice, is also weak and indecisive.
Under Penn's confident direction, Shatner gives a particularly strong performance as the two Kirks. When the "weaker" Kirk calls out, "Someone... make the decision for me," we really feel for him.
An alien "dog" is also turned into two creatures by the haywire transporter. With extra fur and horns on its head, it looks pretty silly.
Trivia experts have pointed out that this is the first episode in which Dr. McCoy said, "He's dead, Jim."
THE ENEMY WITHIN should be highly watchable for most Sci-Fi viewers. William Shatner enthusiasts will particularly dig this episode.
